Why Do I Need Topsoil?
As its name suggests, topsoil sits atop the natural soil bed, forming a thin yet essential layer. Typically between 2 to 8 inches, this layer is the cradle of plant life. Within its depths, nutrients, water retention capabilities, aeration, and pH balance converge to dictate a plant’s fate. Without this robust foundation, plants falter—struggling not just to flourish but merely to survive.
Every soil comprises a blend of clay, sand, and silt. Topsoil, however, has a good bit extra. Around 10% of its makeup is organic matter, derived from the remnants of plants and animals. This organic material isn’t just filler; it’s a treasure trove of compounds that sustains the intricate web of life within the soil.
Beneath the surface, a bustling microscopic ecosystem takes shape. Bacteria, fungi, nematodes, and countless other microorganisms thrive in topsoil. Astonishingly, a single teaspoon can house a billion bacteria, diligently working to break down organic matter and minerals. Their efforts release nutrients vital to plant growth, while their byproducts transform the soil, binding particles into a crumbly, porous structure ideal for roots to grow through.

“Good quality bedding soil, delivered on time”
“Good quality bedding soil, delivered on time. The driver backed his very large dumptruck EXACTLY into the middle of my driveway, on the first try, without touching one blade of grass. I don’t think more than a teaspoonful of the dirt went on the grass. Could your drivers please give lessons to Amazon and UPS?”

How to Use Topsoil

Start a New Lawn
Starting fresh with a new lawn—whether at a newly constructed home or after removing an old, lackluster one—begins with quality topsoil. The first step? Loosen the existing soil. Break apart compacted clumps, discard debris, and create a welcoming bed for your new layer of fertility.
Once the groundwork is ready, it’s time to add topsoil. Delivered FREE, our topsoil arrives ready to transform your yard. Unsure how much to order? Reach out to our experts, who’ll help you calculate the perfect amount.
Spread the topsoil evenly, fertilize the surface, and till the layers together. Your tilling should go deep—reaching into the subsoil—to ensure the topsoil, fertilizer, and subsoil integrate seamlessly. This blend sets the stage for strong roots and thriving grass.
Next comes the fun part: generously sowing your grass seeds. To protect them from wind and curious birds, lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of topsoil. Water daily for at least two weeks, and watch as your new lawn springs to life.
Regrade Your Lawn
Proper grading is crucial to a healthy, functional lawn. The ground around your home should slope downward by 2 to 3 inches every 10 feet to direct water away from structures. Slopes that are too shallow can lead to drainage issues, while overly steep slopes risk soil erosion.
To regrade problem areas, remove the existing topsoil in the affected spots. Clear it away to expose the subsoil, then address the highs and lows—scraping down elevated areas and redistributing the excess soil into depressions.
With the terrain prepared, it’s time to add topsoil. Determine how much you’ll need, and enjoy FREE, fast delivery. Spread a 2-inch layer of topsoil over the exposed subsoil, then till deeply—aiming for about 4 inches of depth. This process blends the new topsoil with the loosened subsoil, allowing roots to grow without encountering abrupt soil barriers.
Once your lawn is regraded and planted, the improved slope and enriched soil will work together to prevent erosion, ensuring both a healthier yard and better drainage.

Fill in Depressions
Uneven spots in your lawn? Topsoil is the perfect solution for filling depressions, whether shallow or more significant. Simply spread the topsoil over the area and rake it evenly for small dips to create a smooth surface.
For deeper depressions, a bit more effort is needed. Carefully lift the sod using a shovel, add topsoil to the hole, and thoroughly mix it with the underlying soil to create a cohesive layer. Once the depression is level, replace the sod, pressing it firmly into place.
With its nutrient-rich composition, our topsoil doesn’t just fill depressions—it transforms them into fertile, stable patches that blend seamlessly with the rest of your lawn.

Using Organic Growing Media
Depressions and erosion can damage your landscape and make it difficult to maintain. Topsoil can be used to fill in depressions and level out uneven areas. This will help prevent erosion and create a more attractive and functional landscape.

Building a New Garden
Our organic growing media, rich in decomposed organic matter, is the ultimate soil conditioner. It enriches the ground with vital nutrients and improves its texture. Spread the media over your designated garden area, till it into the existing soil, and watch as your barren plot transforms into fertile ground teeming with potential.
Revitalizing Old Gardens
An aging garden often has depleted nutrients, compacted soil, and diminished yields. Our organic growing media rejuvenates this stale soil. Its organic matter feeds the soil’s microorganisms, creating a bustling ecosystem that churns out plant-available nutrients.
For more dramatic restoration, garden mixes step in like a spa day for your garden beds. Spread the mix over the tired soil, blending it gently but thoroughly. Not only does this enhance the nutrient profile, but it also improves water retention and drainage—both critical for robust plant health.
